BRAVO FOR AVOCADO!

To celebrate that June is Avocado Month (who knew?), on Wednesday, June 19th, we’re giving an order of FREE Chips and Guacamole to anyone who purchases an entrée. And believe me people, if you haven’t tried our guacamole, it’s absolutely delicious; it’s my single favorite food on the planet. It is made with #1 Hass Avocados, hand smashed (not actually with our hands but the hands are holding a smasher) and made in small batches throughout the day.

In addition, we want you to show your love of the super food and unleash your creative side. You could win a free burrito or catering for 20. Come in to any Cal Tort and get a flyer with an avocado or download it here. Decorate it any way you want. Then email your creation to spunky@caltort.com, post a picture of it to Facebook or Twitter and tag it #CalTortGuacArt.

Are you a budding filmmaker? Shoot a Vine starring one or more avocados. Then post the video to Vine and tag it #CalTortGuacArt. That’s all there is to it. We’ll choose our favorite amped up avocado art each day and the best for the month to win fabulous prizes. What are you waiting for?

Need some inspiration or want to check out your fellow Cal Torters’ creations? Click here.

So please come out and celebrate Avocado Month all month long, but especially on the 19th with free Chips and Guac (you’ve earned the right to shorten the name). It’s the avocado event of the season!

SPEAKING OF OUR FABULOUS FOOD…

Have you tried our Street Tacos? They’re here for a limited time and they’re so, so good! Just look at their mouthwatering goodness…

Buy all 3 of the same kind, buy them separately or mix and match. Just buy them! They’re a taste sensation, I tell you. When’s the last time you had a taste sensation? See – my point exactly.

AND FINALLY…

Last month in honor of Mother’s Day, I wrote about how I think my children will remember me. So this month, in honor of Father’s Day, I’m going to tell how I think my kids will remember their father, or as they like to call him, “the fun one.” Ready? Here goes…

Our father taught us how to make grapes come out of our nose.

Our father didn’t pay any attention to what he dressed us in, despite the fact that there was a foot differential in our heights. Or that we were boys. Many times we left the house wearing our mother’s clothes.

Our father would fix all of our toys – including the ones that made noise. (I seriously heard my husband yell the other day, “Hey Jack! I fixed your whistle!” Who fixes their kid’s whistle?)

Every single story our father told us ended in tragedy, no matter what the subject. (“And after eating his cereal, little Jimmy plunged to his death.”)

Our father didn’t appreciate how funny our mother was. He regrets that now. (Now that we’re gone and there’s no buffer between them.)

Seriously, I hope all you fathers out there (and my husband, Peter, in particular – which would mean I have to get crackin’) have a wonderful day!

IT’S A 3-DAY FIESTA!

Cinco de Mayo’s right around the corner. Because it falls on a Sunday this year, we’re celebrating it not only on Cinco de Mayo, but Tres and Cuatro de Mayo as well.

That’s right – for every entrée that you purchase at California Tortilla on Friday, May 3rd; Saturday, May 4th, or Sunday, May 5th, we’ll give you a FREE taco coupon that can be redeemed anytime between May 6th and May 15th. (Hopefully you’ve got a head for dates…and languages.)

So come on in May 3rd – 5th and celebrate our favorite holiday with a taco on us!

SPEAKING OF ONLINE PINATAS

Want to win delicious prizes and possibly even catering for 20? Starting Friday, May 3rd, just visit www.californiatortilla.com and play our piñata game. What is it? I have no idea since I’m writing about it without seeing it, but it’s got to be fun, right? Everyone likes a piñata. (Everyone except the kid who gets hit in the head with the stick.)

AND THE WINNER IS…

Last month, thousand of you voted for our next special and let me tell you, you have made a FABULOUS choice: STREET TACOS.

What are Street Tacos? Street Tacos are mini white corn tortillas filled with savory meats and sauces. We’ll be including 3 of the following amazingly delicious Street Tacos in this month’s special:

Korean BBQ Taco: Melted jack cheese, mesquite steak, Korean BBQ sauce, cabbage slaw, green onions and a drizzle of Sriracha chili sauce. (This is my single most favorite special we’ve ever had.)

Carnitas Verde Taco: Melted jack cheese, carnitas, enchilada sauce, onion/cilantro relish.

Havana Chicken Taco: Melted jack cheese, mesquite chicken, Havana sauce, pico de gallo and an avocado slice.

Buy 3 for $6.49 or make it a combo meal with a regular soda and chips and queso (or salsa) for $8.69. I could go on and on about how great these tacos are, but starting on Monday, May 20th, you’ll be able to check them out yourself.

MOTHER’S DAY MEMORIES

Mother’s Day is almost here and last year, as none of you remember, I shared with you some recollections of my own mother – most of them having to do with the different (but loving) ways she put her childrens’ lives in peril.

This year, I thought I’d write a list of what I think my kids’ recollections of me will be when they’re adults. Ready?

Our mother was so cheap, she cut the paper towels in half. (In my defense, I thought I had bought the paper towels where you can pick the size of the towel; I cut them in half because I hate to waste the paper. But you know that’s the only thing they’re going to remember from their childhood, don’t you?)

Our mother would mortify us by acting like she knew us when she picked us up from school.

We once asked our mother if grass had been invented yet when she was a kid.

When our mother didn’t want to share her food with us, she told us it had caffeine in it. Upon reflection, she would have moved much faster if there was caffeine in as many things as she said there was.

Our mother used to warm our clothes in the dryer in the morning so they wouldn’t be cold when we put them on and we were very unappreciative. We regret that now. (Some things I say just for me.)

On that note, I hope all of the mothers out there have an absolutely wonderful Mother’s Day. If you have any thoughts on how you think your kids will remember their childhood, I’d love to hear them. Email them to me at pfelix@caltort.com

The Elito 8 Tips Off!

Help us choose our next menu special from a list of 8 and YOU could win a catering party for 20 as well as a big screen TV. (Has anyone noticed that we give away a lot of big screen TVs? Where are we getting them?)

Here’s how the Elito 8 works:

8 menu items (teams) are battling it out for the ultimate prize—a coveted spot as California Tortilla’s new menu special—and your votes will determine the champion. And let me tell you, these menu items are the BEST. You’ll want them all.

Vote once a day for each game and pass it on to friends to ensure your favorite team comes out on top. For each vote, you’ll get one entry to win the grand prize. Voting has already begun but there’s still time. The Elito 8 runs through Friday, April 5th.

Click here to join the madness and check out the teams.

Vote now and you could take home the trophy…

*Full Contest Rules

Free Cheese on Tax Day

Because you have to pay a lot of cheese on Monday, April 15th, we’re giving anyone who makes a purchase that day and says “1040” FREE Chips and Queso. Get it? Free cheese because you have to pay cheese. It’s a play on words! (I hate plays on words. You’d think I love them, wouldn’t you?)

So stop on by and let us treat you this tax day. It’s the least we can do.

So That’s What It’s Called

Feeling out of sorts lately but you don’t know why? We think we may have the answer. After many complicated lab experiments (much of it involving your DNA), we’ve identified certain medical conditions that can occur from eating at California Tortilla.

So without further ado, here are just a few of the things that we think may be throwing you off your game:

Overboard Brownie Behavior: This is the compulsion to go through each and every brownie several times over to make sure you’ve got the biggest, most chocolatey one; thus making all the remaining brownies warm and mushy for the next person.

Ticket Out of Order Panic Disorder: This is the panicky feeling you get when a ticket number higher than yours is called and you’re sure that since we’ve already gone past your number, we’ll refuse to give you your order, even though you’ve paid for it.

Scary Dairy Distress: This is the fear that, instead of making an item with “no sour cream” as requested, the diabolical spunky cashier will push a button that says, “Make with extra sour cream and then roll the entire meal in a light layer of sour cream.”

Post Promotion Stress Syndrome: This is the horrifying realization that, after practicing for weeks for one of Cal Tort’s “Do a dance and get a free taco” promotions, you’ve just done the hula in front of the entire restaurant on the wrong day.

Burrito Regretito: This is what you experience when you realize you’ve been shouting very specific instructions at the line cook on how to make a burrito that isn’t yours.

Recognize yourself? I knew it! Now you can seek the help you need from professionals who’ll have no idea what you’re talking about.

And Finally, Get it While You Can

As you just read, the Bacon Chicken Club Burrito is soon moving out of the top spot, but there’s still time to order it. Hurry!

This team throws more alley-oops than chest passes.

During the offseason, Street Tacos became a global sensation when its streetball videos took the internet by storm. What was once a small team known only on local playgrounds and gyms, suddenly became the lead story on every daily sports show.

The team is led by smooth shooting, slick dribbling point guard dubbed, “Hot Sauce” who often breaks out into a salsa dance after hitting a game-winning shot. He’s also known for throwing down dunks hot enough for the Wall of Flame.

With skilled dribblers and high flyers at every position, this team throws more alley-oops than chest passes. Street Tacos just may be the most exciting team to watch during the Elito 8.

Street Tacos Starting Lineup:

grilled mini white corn tortillas

assorted savory meats

variety of condiments and salsas

Keepin’ it low and slow.

If there’s one phrase that sums up Pulled Pork BBQ Burrito’s playing style, it’s “low and slow.” Fans joke that it takes them 6 hours just to warm up!

Though this team has yet to score more than 35 points in a game, don’t be surprised if it makes a run in the tournament. With two of the league’s best big men, its low-post play could just carry them to the championship. Pulled Pork BBQ Burrito is a real contender for the crown.

There’s also been a resurgence in Pulled Pork BBQ Burrito’s fanbase in recent months. There’s just something about spring that brings fans back to this team.

Pulled Pork BBQ Burrito Starting Lineup:

savory slow-cooked pulled pork

rice

cole slaw

salsa
