THAT’S ONE POWERFUL FREE TACO…

Did you know that 16 million kids are at risk for hunger right here in the U.S.?

With that thought in mind, California Tortilla is once again helping raise money for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign, which runs from Tuesday, September 4 through Sunday, September 23. With a donation of $1 or more, you’ll get a coupon for a FREE taco for your next visit—and much more importantly, for every dollar you donate you’ll connect a child in need with 10 meals.*

So please join us from 9/4-9/23 and help us fight childhood hunger. It’s a great, yet really simple way to get involved.

*Valid through October 1, 2012. One coupon per donation regardless of amount. The amount above is based on the individual experiences of Share Our Strength’s grant recipients and is provided to illustrate how community investments can be used to help end childhood hunger. Each contribution made to Share Our Strength represents a contribution to its organizational mission. Donations will be used to reach the highest number of children facing hunger in America. Share Our Strength is a non-profit 501(c)3organization. For more information, visit Strength.org.

THE NUMBERS ARE IN AND…

For the first few weeks of our Presidential Burrito Bowl Contest, Obama’s Chicken Teriyaki Luau Bowl is beating Romney’s Mexican Mitt-Loaf Bowl by a mere four percentage points: 52% to 48%. There’s still plenty of time to sway the election though! If you want your guy to be president, you better come in and order his fabulously delicious burrito bowl as often as you can. Because as you all know, we guarantee that whosever bowl sells the most will be the next president. So if your guy doesn’t win, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.

6000 DAYS AND COUNTING

It just occurred to me that California Tortilla has been open more than 6000 days. Isn’t that amazing? With that said, it’s been a great adventure and I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the highs and lows of those first 6000 days. Ready?

Day 1: California Tortilla opens. Nobody cares but us and our relatives who eat for free.

Day 56: Noticing a distinct lack of customers, one of our neighbors asks us if we’ve considered turning the restaurant into a Chinese buffet. We tell him yes, that was the first thing that came to mind. (And then I ran into the bathroom and cried.)

Day 92: Business booms when Tony Kornheiser proclaims his love for our food on his radio show. Our dreams of a Chinese buffet are temporarily put on hold.

Day 217: The Monday Night Wheel debuts. Surprisingly few people are happy when they land on “Free Can of Corn.”

Day 492: An employee picks up something off the floor without us asking him to.

Day 756: We open on Sundays. At the exact same moment all of our employees become churchgoers.

Day 1243: We start serving wine.

Day 1244: We stop serving wine.

Day 2361: The Honey Lime Burrito is added to the menu. Customers are shocked by the unprecedented combination of honey and lime.

Day 2998: California Tortilla opens in Potomac, Maryland to record shattering sales. Customers are shocked by the unprecedented combination of Mexican food and Potomac people.

Day 3253: We start franchising. Our relatives want to know if they get to eat for free at the franchised California Tortillas as well.

Day 3654: We discontinue serving apple empanadas. Thousands protest. We’re taken by surprise given that we sell 3 a year.

Day 4373: We start putting tri-colored chips on the salads!

Day 4374: We stop putting tri-colored chips on the salads when we realize the colors rub off on the chicken and make it look moldy.

Day 4639: We give away free tacos on Election Day. Our relatives are jumping out of their seats.

Day 5992: California Tortilla gets a fabulous new look and the crowds go wild.

And projecting into the future…

Day 6299: We accurately predict the winner of the presidential election yet again and California Tortilla will be featured on the cover of People Magazine. Woo-hoo!

So there you have it, folks. It’s been more fun than you can imagine. Thanks for being a part of it. And a special thanks to Tony Kornheiser–we love that man!
